TOM CREAN – ANTARCTIC EXPLORER
A MAJOR COUP FOR THEATRE NIGHTS
IN HOWTH GOLF CLUB
Our next Theatre Night in Howth Golf Club, on Friday January 17th, presents one of the most outstanding dramatic productions of the last twenty years in Irish and international theatre. Tom Crean, Antarctic Explorer has been, since its premiere in 2003, an outstanding international success playing to packed houses in New York, London, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Sydney and Dublin’s Gaiety and Olympia theatres.
Aidan Dooley, its creator and performer, has won Best Actor Awards at numerous worldwide festivals and we are thrilled to have him perform for our members in Howth Golf Club.
Tom Crean ranks up there with Scott and Shackleton as one of the great Antarctic explorers. He was a member of three of the four major British expeditions to Antarctica during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His final expedition was with Shackleton on the Endurance. When the Endurance became stuck in ice and sank, Crean was a participant in a series of dramatic events including months spent drifting on the ice, a journey in lifeoats to Elephant Island, and an open boat journey of 1,500 km from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Upon reaching South Georgia, Crean was one of the party of three which undertook the first land crossing of the island, without maps or proper mountaineering equipment, to get aid.
After this expedition, Crean wisely retired to his native Annascaul in Kerry where he opened up a public house, appropriately called the “South Pole Inn” where he lived quietly until his death in 1938.
Members will not only have the benefit of this marvellous dramatic story in close proximity in our Carrickbrack Room but they will also be spared paying Broadway or West End prices for their tickets. A limited number of tickets at €15 each are now on sale in the Club Bar. We expect this production to sell out quickly, so members are urged to make their bookings early.
Doors will open at 7.40pm, seating is unreserved and the show starts at 8pm.
We thank all our members for their enthusiastic support in 2013 and wish you all every happiness and success in 2014.
Regards,

AT OUR NEW YEARS EVE GALA DINNER
Dear Members
The New Year is almost upon us and we in Howth Golf Club are planning to ring it in with a great party on the night of the 31st to raise the spirits and give us all a new energy for 2014.
Our programme for the Evening includes
*** A fabulous 5-Course Dinner at 9pm
*** Traditional Countdown to the New Year
*** A Draw for an Amazing Prize of Dinner and Overnight at MacNean House
*** Dancing to a very lively Band to 1.30pm at least
And all this for an attractive €50
Our guest caterers, Kyles, have impressed us all with the quality of their food and service and we have arranged a fabulous 5-course menu – choice of starter – soup-choice of main course – choice of dessert- choice of tea or coffee
Tickets will be available in the Club Bar from Tuesday, December 18th, so why not come along. This is a night for couples or singles. All are welcome and we are planning a Club table, so no one will be on their own.
And if you were planning a night out with family, friends or neighbours, why not think of Howth Golf Club where they will get a warm welcome, a beautifully decorated room, a fabulous meal and great entertainment at a most reasonable price.
When the night is over, we will have one especially very happy couple with a real treat in store for them in 2014. Thanks to the generosity of Ireland’s most popular and talented celebrity chef, Neven Maguire, we will be drawing a ticket on the night where the lucky winner will be invited to a gourmet dinner in his very famous MacNean House Restaurant in Blacklion, stay over in their very comfortable accommodation and enjoy a breakfast like they have never had before cooked by Neven.
And depending on the date, Neven himself will be there for a chat as they check out. This is a limited ticket draw, for a prize valued at over €300, with all proceeds going to Bro Kevin and his Capuchin Food Centre for Homeless People in Bow Street.Tickets €10 from the Club Bar and at Dinner unless sold out beforehand. Ask anyone who has been there – it is a fabulous culinary experience.

Founded in 1916 the heath land links style course was designed by the renowned golfer and course architect James Braid, a 5 times winner of “The Open” Golf Championship who can count the design of the prestigious Kings and Queens Courses at Gleneagles amongst his greatest achievements.
James was well known for including dog leg design golf holes in his course designs and the 5th hole in particular is an excellent example of how he blended a great golf hole into the unique Howth Heathers. The exceptional views from the 16th tee are worthy of mention in any golf guide.
